Underactive Thyroid

Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid) is a common autoimmune condition causing fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, swelling of the face, menstrual irregularities, and low energy. It affects women more often but can occur at any age, including in children. The thyroid gland produces inadequate T3 and T4 hormones due to genetic, environmental, or stress-related factors. Conventional treatment typically involves long-term or lifelong use of Levothyroxine. Homeopathy offers a supportive, evidence-informed approach aimed at stimulating the thyroid gland to enhance its own hormone production. In many cases—except when the gland has lost functional capacity—homeopathy may help. Dr. Rajesh Shah has developed patented homeopathic medicines shown to activate thyroid function in both human and animal studies.

Dr. Rajesh Shah's Insights on Underactive Thyroid

The standard treatment for underactive thyroid (Hypothyroidism) is lifelong thyroxine supplementation. However, Dr. Rajesh Shah believes treatment should first aim to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce its own hormones, using external hormones only when the gland has lost its functional capacity.

In addition to established homeopathic medicines that support thyroid activity, Dr. Shah has developed new, research-backed formulations shown to activate the thyroid gland in animals and humans. Homeopathy is often effective in early or less hormone-dependent cases and may help improve natural thyroid function over time.

What is Underactive Thyroid?

The thyroid is a small gland in the neck that produces the hormones T4 and T3, which regulate metabolism and support the healthy functioning of the digestive system, heart, muscles, bones, brain, and reproductive system. When the thyroid cannot produce enough hormone, it leads to hypothyroidism, one of the most common hormonal disorders.

Autoimmunity, genetic tendencies, and iodine deficiency are key causes. Early stages may show few symptoms, but untreated hypothyroidism can lead to concerns such as weight gain, constipation, joint pain, infertility, heart conditions, and depression.

Homeopathy for Underactive Thyroid

Homeopathy for Underactive thyroid works by stimulating the gland to produce hormones naturally. It does not provide external thyroid supplements. Results are more likely when the thyroid is still functional, and the condition is of recent onset, particularly in patients receiving hormone replacement therapy for less than 2 years. When the gland is severely damaged or atrophied, the homeopathic response may be limited.

Commonly used homepathic medicines for Underactive thyroid

Homeopathic medicines are selected based on the totality of symptoms, taking into account physical and emotional health, genetic predispositions, metabolism, sleep patterns, and environmental influences. Over 25 homeopathic remedies may be used, including Natrum muriaticum, Natrum iodatum, Iodum, Phosphorus, Staphysagria, Sepia, Kali carbonicum, Thuja occidentalis, and others.
Self-medication is not advised.

Scope of Improvement

If the thyroid gland still has the capacity to become activated, homeopathic medicines could be used to activate it and normalise hormone levels. If the patient has been on thyroid supplements for more than 2 years, the gland may have become lax, and homeopathy may not be effective. Early cases and children react more favorably. Periodic tests were used to assess the efficacy of homeopathic treatment.

Treatment Duration

Homeopathic treatment for an underactive thyroid is usually required for 1–2 years, depending on the case. Progress is monitored through periodic thyroid function tests (T3, T4, TSH) and regular clinical evaluations. Some individuals may require treatment beyond two years. It is important to note that conventional thyroid hormone therapy is typically lifelong.

Disease Mechanism

Due to genetic and immunological factors—and, in rare cases, pituitary dysfunction—the thyroid gland may fail to function adequately. As a result, T3 and T4 hormones are produced in suboptimal amounts. When T3 and T4 levels fall, TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) rises in an effort to stimulate the gland. In Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, an immune-mediated inflammation of the thyroid further contributes to this dysfunction.

Prevalence Data

An estimated 3-5% of the world population and more than 6% of the female population in India suffer from underactive thyroid. This is a considerable number. More females than men suffer from this condition, about a 95:5 ratio. However, in clinical practice, we observe that an increasing number of men are being diagnosed with this condition in recent years.

Major symptms of Underacgive thyroid

The most common symptoms of Underactive thyroid include weight gain, swelling of the body, especially the face and feet due to water retention, hair loss, menstrual irregularities in females, dry skin, mood swings, depression, lethargy, weakness, fatigue, and vague bodyache.

Possible Complications

Since the thyroid gland plays a significant role in metabolism and cardiovascular health, untreated cases of underactive thyroid show heart complications, increased cholesterol, hypertension, nerve problems, and infertility in females. A severe case may present with goiter, coma, severe depression, and mental health problems.

Diagnosis Steps

Thyroid hormone levels, namely T3 and T4, should be evaluated, along with TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone). Free T3, T4, and TSH tests are suggested. ANA antibodies are to be assessed to determine Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. A thyroid biopsy is not indicated unless a thyroid nodule and goiter are present.

Conventional Care

Conventional medication is intended to supplement deficient thyroid hormones.

Supportive Measures

Lifestyle improvement is an essential part of thyroid treatment. Regular exercise for at least 45 minutes a day is beneficial. A balanced diet and avoiding excess iodine intake, iodised salt, and vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower, and broccoli may also support better thyroid function.

Types of Underactive Thyroid

scope of improvement

Primary Hypothyroidism

Thyroid gland fails to produce enough hormones due to gland-related dysfunction.

Prevalence of thyroid

Secondary Hypothyroidism

Pituitary gland does not stimulate the thyroid enough, reducing hormone production.

Thyroid

Subclinical Hypothyroidism

TSH is high while thyroid hormones stay normal, often showing mild or no symptoms.

homeopathy for thyroid disorders

Tertiary Hypothyroidism

Hypothalamus fails to release TRH, leading to reduced stimulation of the thyroid gland.

Our Expertise

  • Our expertise comes from the learnings from treating more than 1,400 cases of underactive thyroid over the past 40 years. A key strength at Life Force is the use of new homeopathic medicines developed by Dr. Rajesh Shah, which have shown encouraging results in both animal studies and human cases. In many patients—though not all—homeopathy can improve thyroid function and may help them maintain good health for years without external hormone supplementation.
  • Homeopathy works by stimulating the thyroid gland to produce its own hormones; it does not use thyroid supplements. No other treatment is known to work by stimulating the thyroid gland.
  • Newly diagnosed cases tend to respond best, and children often show better outcomes than adults. Patients who have been on thyroid hormone supplements for over two years are generally less responsive to homeopathic treatment.

Homeopathy for Underactive Thyroid

Homeopathic medicines at nanopharmaceutical doses have been shown to stimulate the thyroid gland and normalise thyroid hormone levels in animal models. We have also observed such positive results in humans. Dr Rajesh Shah develops the new drugs. We do not achieve 100% success, but the medications have helped many patients manage hypothyroidism with reduced thyroid hormone levels from external supplementation or by stopping thyroid hormone therapy completely. A human clinical trial is underway.
