Homeopathic Management of Nephrotic Syndrome in a 4-Year-Old Child: Significant Reduction in Steroid Dependence and Side-Effects

A 4-year-old boy, Mr. H.G (PIN: 31687) from Jamshedpur, suffering from nephrotic syndrome since the age of 1, experienced frequent relapses and severe side-effects from high-dose steroids, including swelling, weight gain, and fatigue. Case History

A 4-year-old child, Mr. H.G (PIN:31687) from Jamshedpur started treatment at Life Force on 25th March 2017 for his complaint of Nephrotic syndrome.

He was suffering from this condition since he was 1 year of his age. His parents gave a detailed history of the child. He had experienced a relapse of nephrotic syndrome twice until now. He was on a high dose of steroids (Omnacortil). The child had side-effects due to the high dose of steroids. He was suffering from swelling on his hands and legs. He would suffer from breathlessness when the swelling would increase. The swelling and puffiness were present near the eyes and belly area of the kid. The patient was gaining more weight due to the side-effects of steroids. He was experiencing no pain or discomforts. The urine report showed that the protein was high. 

His appetite had increased. He loved to eat chocolates. His water intake was average. His sleep was normal. There were no complaints with regards to his urine and stool. He was a very obstinate child. 

He never had any other major illnesses in the past. There was no major history of any disease in his family. 

After studying the case in detail, Dr. Shah prescribed him Calc Carb 30 and some research-based homeopathic medicines. 

Follow-Ups:

First followup

On 9th May 2017, the parents of the patient updated feedback online. There was no major change in the condition of the child with the medicines. The swelling had further increased. The patient’s urine protein was plus four. The child had become very lazy. He wanted to sleep immediately after having his food. His weight was increasing day-by-day. On the basis of this detailed feedback, Dr. Shah made some changes in the medicines and prescribed it to the patient. 

Second followup

On 13th September 2017, the patient was reported being almost 20% to 30% better than earlier. The child had experienced no relapse of the nephrotic syndrome from the past two months. His urine protein was zero from the last two months. The swelling had vanished completely. The child’s dose of steroids was also reduced by his pediatrician. Also, his weight had started getting normal. He was overall better with the medicines.

Third followup

On 20th January 2018, his condition as it is. There was no further improvement. He was stable. The swelling was absent completely. His urine protein was plus one. The child had started playing with the other children by now. He was very lazy to do any work earlier, but now he was turning active. The parents of the patient were happy to see this progress happening with the medicines. 

Fourth followup

On 16th May 2018, his feedback was updated by his mother. He was improving further. There was no acute episode of nephrotic syndrome bothering him from the last six months, and he was stable with the medicines. His steroids dose was reduced further, as there were no complaints with urine protein. The swelling and complaint of weight gain were not present anymore. The patient was overall stable with the medicines. 

Fifth followup

On 16th November 2018, the parents of the patient reported that he was almost 50% to 60% better with the medicines. The relapses were very mild in intensity. Initially, he was on a very high dose of steroids, but it got reduced to almost half dose now. Occasionally, the patient had cold and cough but its intensity was very less. The protein leakage in urine was not present anymore. 

Sixth followup

On 12th February 2019, the patient was reported being almost 90% better with the medicines. His steroids were tapered off further. The swelling was not present anymore. His weight was restored to the normal range. He was now more active and more energetic than he was earlier. 

His parents thanked Dr. Shah and the whole Life Force team for helping their child to get rid of the side-effects of steroids. The child is perfectly fine and normal now. He is still under the treatment for complete recovery.

Conclusion:

This case illustrates that homeopathy is highly effective in treating nephrotic syndrome in kids incredibly and safely without any side-effects. Homeopathy minimizes the dependency on steroids and helps prevent its side-effects.
