1625+ Trigeminal Neuralgia Patients Treated

Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal Neuralgia is known to be one of the most painful conditions known to humans. It affects the trigeminal nerve, one of the twelve pairs of cranial (brain) nerves responsible for facial sensation. Patients may experience sudden, severe, electric shock–like pain on one side of the face. The intensity of pain can be overwhelming and has a profound impact on quality of life. These painful episodes are believed to result from abnormal electrical discharges along the nerve. Attacks may occur a few times a day or, in severe cases, hundreds of times daily, with each episode lasting from a few seconds to several minutes. Homeopathy has been found, in many cases, to offer meaningful relief and help in controlling the frequency and intensity of pain episodes, thereby improving overall quality of life.

Dr. Rajesh Shah's Insights on Trigeminal Neuralgia

Dr. Rajesh Shah explains that Trigeminal Neuralgia arises from heightened nerve sensitivity, often triggered by routine activities such as touch or chewing. He emphasizes assessing each patient’s pain pattern, frequency, triggers, and overall health. At Life Force Homeopathy, his individualized approach aims to support better nerve stability and improve long-term symptom management through carefully selected remedies.

What is Trigeminal Neuralgia ?

Trigeminal Neuralgia is a chronic, painful condition that affects the Trigeminal nerve. It is a nerve disorder. The Trigeminal nerve is a 5th cranial nerve supplying the face and has three divisions: the ophthalmic branch, the maxillary branch, and the mandibular branch. One or more of the three branches of the nerve may be affected. Damage to the nerve may give rise to intense, excruciating burning and stabbing pain. The pain usually occurs on one side of the face. One cause may be a blood vessel compressing the root of the trigeminal nerve. We do not yet fully understand this disease.

What happens in Trigeminal Neuralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia is characterized by pain arising from abnormal electrical activity in the trigeminal nerve, although the exact cause remains incompletely understood. Even mild triggers, such as light touch, a breeze, or regular facial movements such as talking, chewing, or toothbrushing, can provoke sudden, severe pain.

In some patients, contact between a blood vessel and the trigeminal nerve may irritate the nerve, increase sensitivity, and contribute to these painful episodes.

About Trigeminal Neuralgia pain

Trigeminal Neuralgia is often described as one of the most painful conditions known to humans—sometimes even more intense than pain experienced during a heart attack or childbirth. The pain is commonly compared to a sudden electric shock affecting the face or around the eyes.

These attacks can occur unpredictably, triggered by simple actions such as talking, chewing, touch, or even at rest. During severe episodes, the pain can be so intense that it completely halts activity. This condition results from abnormal electrical activity within the trigeminal nerve.

Homeopathic Relief

Homeopathy may not cure every case of Trigeminal Neuralgia, to be honest. However, homeopathy has remarkably helped hundreds of cases in our experience. It may alleviate painful episodes and reduce their severity, frequency, and duration. Some patients may achieve a disease-free state, known as remission. Many patients can gradually reduce dependence on other conventional medicines. Homeopathy is considered helpful for many individuals with trigeminal neuralgia, including those who have persistent symptoms. It can be taken safely alongside medications prescribed by a neurologist without interfering with their effects.

Can I take homeopathy if I am already on other medicines?

Conventional medicines such as Carbamazepine and Gabapentin may not provide adequate relief in every case of trigeminal neuralgia. Many patients benefit from additional supportive care, such as homeopathy. Homeopathy may further help reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of pain episodes. Both homeopathic and conventional medicines can be taken safely together under medical guidance.

Can conventional drugs be reduced?

Yes, conventional medications, such as Carbamazepine and Gabapentin, may be reduced after obtaining additional relief with homeopathy. Many patients may have adverse effects of conventional drugs, and they need to be reduced. Homeopathy may be able to minimize such drug dependency in many cases, if not all.

Treatment Duration

Trigeminal neuralgia requires long-term treatment. It cannot be cured in a few weeks.  Many individuals experience initial improvement within four to six weeks of homeopathic treatment, though the whole course varies. Recent cases and those not on conventional medicines may respond sooner. When nerve compression is present, the process may take longer. If linked with conditions like multiple sclerosis, response may be slower and management more challenging overall.

Disease Mechanism

Trigeminal neuralgia involves the trigeminal nerve, which has three branches supplying sensation to different facial areas. Symptoms depend on which branch is affected. A common cause is pressure from a nearby blood vessel that may damage the nerve’s myelin covering. Less often, tumors or inflammatory conditions such as multiple sclerosis or autoimmune disorders may contribute, and involvement of multiple branches can intensify the presentation.

How many people have Trigeminal Neralgia?

Trigeminal neuralgia affects approximately 1 in 25,000 people. Reported prevalence rates are about 5.7 per 100,000 women and 2.5 per 100,000 men, although exact global figures are not fully established. The condition most commonly occurs between the ages of 50 and 70 and is seen more frequently in women, particularly after the age of 40. These patterns help clinicians identify individuals who may be at a higher risk of developing trigeminal neuralgia.

Symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia

People with trigeminal neuralgia may feel sharp, electric-shock-like pain on one side of the face, often lasting seconds to minutes. Episodes may be triggered by touch, chewing, speaking, washing the face, brushing teeth, shaving, or exposure to cold. Pain may occur along one or more nerve branches with intermittent pain-free periods. Tingling, numbness, headache, and worsening in cold weather may also be noted in some individuals.

Complications

Some individuals with trigeminal neuralgia may develop complications such as double vision, jaw weakness, or a reduced corneal reflex. These issues can result from the involvement of nearby nerves or prolonged nerve irritation. Early identification of such changes helps guide further evaluation and appropriate management. If an underlying systemic condition, such as systemic lupus erythematosus, is suspected, it should be evaluated accordingly.

Diagnosis of Trigeminal Neuralgia

Diagnosis is mainly based on the type, location, and triggers of the facial pain. A neurological examination helps assess reflexes and nerve involvement. Doctors may advise MRI scanning to check for possible causes such as multiple sclerosis or tumors pressing on the nerve root. This combination of clinical evaluation and imaging helps identify the underlying reason and supports accurate treatment planning for the condition.

Conventional medicines

Conventional treatment of trigeminal neuralgia includes anticonvulsants such as Carbamazepine and Gabapentin, and antispasmodics such as Baclofen. Botox injections may help patients who do not respond well to medications. Surgical options—such as microvascular decompression, glycerol injection, and balloon compression—aim to relieve nerve pressure or block pain signals. Long-term drug use may cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, memory issues, weight gain, and fatigue.

Supportive Measures

We have observed that specific lifestyle adjustments may help reduce triggers and discomfort. Soft foods such as khichdi, upma, idli, or dhokla may reduce chewing strain. Avoiding very hot or cold foods is helpful. Washing with lukewarm water, using soft towels, and rinsing the mouth gently may prevent attacks. Covering the face while traveling and avoiding direct wind or air conditioning also helps. Such measures often improve day-to-day comfort.

Types of Trigeminal Neuralgia

Trigeminal Neuralgia
